The Citroen Relay is one of the most commonly used large panel vans in the UK, and like all Euro 6 diesel vans it is fitted with an AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) system as part of its emissions control. When an AdBlue fault appears, it can be alarming — particularly with a countdown timer warning that the van will not restart after a set number of starts.
This guide explains the most common Relay AdBlue faults, what the warning messages mean, and what options are available when the system stops working correctly.
How the Citroen Relay AdBlue System Works
AdBlue is a water-urea solution that is injected into the exhaust stream before the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst. The SCR catalyst uses the AdBlue to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour — meeting Euro 6 emissions requirements.
The system has several key components that can each generate different faults:
- AdBlue tank: Typically holds 15–20 litres on the Relay and is filled via a separate blue-capped filler
- AdBlue pump and heating module: Pumps AdBlue from the tank to the injector and keeps it above freezing temperature
- AdBlue injector (dosing valve): Sprays a precise amount of AdBlue into the exhaust pipe
- NOx sensors: Upstream and downstream sensors that measure NOx levels entering and leaving the SCR catalyst
- SCR catalyst: The catalytic converter that performs the actual NOx conversion using the AdBlue
- SCR ECU: The control module that manages the entire system
Common Citroen Relay AdBlue Warning Messages
The Relay dashboard displays specific messages depending on the nature and severity of the AdBlue fault. Understanding what each message means is the first step in knowing how urgently action is required.
| Warning Message | What It Means | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| “Top up AdBlue” | AdBlue level is low — typically below 2,500 miles of remaining range | Fill AdBlue soon. No performance restriction yet. |
| “AdBlue: Start impossible in X starts” | AdBlue tank is very low OR a system fault has triggered a countdown. The van will not start after the countdown reaches zero. | Urgent. Fill AdBlue or seek diagnosis immediately. |
| “AdBlue system fault” | A component within the AdBlue system has failed or reported an error to the SCR ECU | Urgent. Requires diagnostic scan to identify fault. |
| “Emissions system fault” | Broader emissions system message that may relate to AdBlue, NOx sensors, or SCR catalyst efficiency | Requires diagnostic scan. Performance may be restricted. |
| “AdBlue quality fault” | NOx sensors detecting that the SCR catalyst is not reducing NOx effectively — often caused by contaminated AdBlue, diluted AdBlue, or wrong fluid in the tank | Urgent. System may have been contaminated. |
Common Fault Codes for Citroen Relay AdBlue Systems
When a diagnostic scan is performed, one or more of the following codes are typically stored depending on the nature of the fault:
P20E8 / P204F / P20EE
SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold. The NOx sensors indicate the catalyst is not reducing NOx sufficiently. Common causes: low-quality AdBlue, contaminated tank, worn SCR catalyst.
P0191 / Fuel rail pressure
Not an AdBlue code but sometimes appears alongside AdBlue faults on vans with combined emission system problems.
P0470 / P0471 / P0472
Exhaust pressure sensor faults. Can appear alongside AdBlue codes when DPF and SCR systems are interconnected.
U029D / NOx sensor communication
Loss of communication with upstream or downstream NOx sensor. The SCR system cannot verify that AdBlue is working correctly without valid sensor data.
Most Common Causes of Citroen Relay AdBlue Faults
Based on what we see regularly on Euro 6 Relay vans, these are the most frequent root causes:
1. Low or Depleted AdBlue
The most straightforward cause. The AdBlue tank has run empty or is critically low. Simply topping up with high-quality ISO 22241 AdBlue may resolve the warning. However, if a countdown has already been triggered or a system fault code is stored alongside the low-level warning, a diagnostic reset is needed after topping up — the fault will not clear itself automatically in all cases.
2. Contaminated AdBlue Tank
This is increasingly common and can be expensive to resolve. The most frequent contamination scenario is diesel fuel being accidentally added to the AdBlue tank (or vice versa). Even a small amount of diesel in the AdBlue tank will cause the quality monitoring system to flag a fault and trigger a countdown. The entire AdBlue system — tank, pump, and injector — typically needs to be flushed or replaced.
3. AdBlue Pump Failure
The AdBlue pump module is responsible for delivering fluid from the tank to the dosing injector at the correct pressure. Pump failure means no AdBlue reaches the exhaust, and the system cannot reduce NOx. A live pressure test during the diagnostic session will confirm whether the pump is operating within specification.
4. Failed AdBlue Injector (Dosing Valve)
The dosing valve sprays precise quantities of AdBlue into the exhaust pipe. It can become blocked with crystallised AdBlue deposits — particularly on vans that do short, low-speed journeys where the exhaust does not reach high enough temperatures to keep the injector clear. Symptoms include poor SCR efficiency codes even with a full, clean AdBlue tank.
5. NOx Sensor Failure
The upstream and downstream NOx sensors are the system’s eyes. If either sensor fails or gives out-of-range readings, the ECU cannot verify that the SCR catalyst is working correctly and will flag a fault. NOx sensors on commercial vans typically last 100,000–150,000 miles, but can fail earlier due to contamination or vibration.
6. SCR Catalyst Degradation
After extended mileage or exposure to contaminated AdBlue, the SCR catalyst substrate can degrade and lose its ability to convert NOx effectively. This appears as an efficiency fault code and typically requires catalyst replacement.
What to Do When a Citroen Relay AdBlue Warning Appears
The right response depends on which warning message has appeared:
- Low level warning only: Top up with high-quality ISO 22241 AdBlue. Check that the correct filler was used. If the warning clears and no fault code is stored, the issue was simply low fluid.
- Countdown warning (X starts remaining): Top up AdBlue immediately and book a diagnostic scan. Even after topping up, the countdown may not reset without a professional code clear on some Relay variants.
- System fault or quality fault: Book a diagnostic scan before adding more AdBlue or attempting any fix. Adding clean AdBlue to a contaminated system makes the problem harder to resolve. A diagnosis first determines exactly what is wrong.
Can a Citroen Relay AdBlue Fault Be Resolved Without Going to the Main Dealer?
In most cases, yes. AdBlue system diagnostics on the Relay require professional-grade equipment that can communicate with the SCR ECU — but this does not mean only a Citroen main dealer can perform the work. Independent specialists with the correct diagnostic tools can read the same fault codes, perform the same live data tests, and carry out the same reset procedures.
Main dealer servicing for AdBlue faults can be significantly more expensive than independent specialist work for the same repair. At Pro Remapping in Stoke-on-Trent, we work on Relay vans regularly alongside Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato equivalents, using diagnostic tools capable of full system access including SCR and AdBlue module communication.
For the Staffordshire area and surrounding regions, we offer a practical, diagnostic-led approach that identifies the actual fault before any parts are quoted or fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reset a Citroen Relay AdBlue warning myself?
If the warning is purely a low-level alert and you have topped up with the correct AdBlue, the warning will often clear automatically after a short drive. However, if a system fault code is stored — or if a countdown has been triggered — the fault will not clear on its own in most cases. A professional diagnostic scan and code clear is required using equipment capable of communicating with the SCR ECU.
How much AdBlue does a Citroen Relay use?
Typical AdBlue consumption on a Euro 6 Relay is approximately 1 litre per 1,000 miles under normal driving conditions, though this varies with load, duty cycle, and driving style. High-load or stop-start urban driving increases consumption. Most operators find they need to top up roughly every service interval or more frequently on high-mileage commercial use.
What happens if I ignore the AdBlue countdown on a Relay?
The van will physically not start once the countdown reaches zero. This is enforced at ECU level and cannot be bypassed simply by turning the ignition off and on again. The only way to start the van is to address the AdBlue fault — which typically means topping up with clean AdBlue and having the system professionally reset. Being stranded with a van full of stock or equipment is an avoidable outcome with prompt attention to the warning.
Is a Citroen Relay AdBlue fault the same as a DPF fault?
Not the same, but related. The DPF (diesel particulate filter) and the SCR AdBlue catalyst are separate but connected parts of the exhaust aftertreatment system. A fault in one can trigger secondary codes in the other, and some diagnostic sessions on Relay vans will reveal both DPF and AdBlue related codes stored together. Each needs to be addressed in the correct order — typically the DPF first, then the SCR system.
Can a Citroen Relay AdBlue fault cause power loss?
Yes. Once the system flags a serious AdBlue fault, the ECU typically enters a derated power mode to encourage the driver to resolve the issue. This can feel similar to limp mode, with noticeably reduced power and throttle response. The power limitation is typically removed once the fault is cleared and the system is confirmed to be operating correctly again.
