When this code is stored, the engine management system has detected that the actual fuel rail pressure is consistently lower than the pressure commanded by the ECU for the current engine operating conditions.

On a modern diesel engine with a common rail direct injection system, fuel is stored at very high pressure in the fuel rail — typically between 200 and 2,000 bar depending on the engine load and speed. This precise pressure is maintained by the high-pressure fuel pump and regulated by the pressure regulator. When the pressure falls below the commanded target, the ECU logs P0087 and often restricts engine output to protect injectors and other fuel system components.

P0087 is common across a wide range of diesel vehicles — including Ford Transit, Vauxhall Vivaro, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Transporter, Peugeot Expert, Citroën Dispatch, Land Rover Defender, and many passenger cars with common rail diesel engines.

P0087 is rarely a silent fault. Most vehicles will show noticeable drivability symptoms alongside the engine management light:

  • Loss of power: The engine feels weak and sluggish, particularly under acceleration or at higher loads.
  • Hesitation or stumbling: The engine hesitates or stumbles when you press the accelerator, particularly from low revs or when pulling away.
  • Limp mode: The ECU may restrict power to protect injectors and other components. Speed may be limited to around 50–60 mph.
  • Hard starting or extended cranking: If fuel pressure is slow to build on startup, the engine may crank for longer than usual before firing.
  • Engine management light on: The EML illuminates and P0087 (and sometimes related codes) are stored.
  • Smoke: In some cases, a rich or lean condition caused by incorrect fuel delivery produces black or white smoke from the exhaust.
Don’t ignore P0087. Running a diesel with consistently low fuel rail pressure causes injectors to wear prematurely, as they rely on correct rail pressure to atomise fuel properly. Early diagnosis protects the injector set — which is a significantly more expensive repair if left.

Common Causes of P0087 on Diesel Vehicles

Weak or Failing High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)

This is the most common cause on high-mileage diesel vehicles. The HPFP is responsible for generating and maintaining fuel rail pressure. As the pump wears — particularly the internal metering valve and delivery elements — it loses the ability to sustain commanded pressure under load. The fault is typically pressure-related: rail pressure is fine at idle but drops significantly under acceleration, which is when the ECU demands high pressure.

Fuel Pressure Regulator Fault

The fuel pressure regulator (also called the pressure limiting valve or PCV on some systems) controls the maximum and minimum pressure in the rail. If the regulator leaks internally or is stuck open, it bleeds off pressure continuously. This presents as low rail pressure across all conditions — idle and load alike.

On some vehicles, the pressure control valve is serviceable separately from the pump. On others, it is internal to the HPFP and requires pump replacement.

Blocked or Restricted Fuel Filter

A blocked fuel filter restricts fuel flow to the HPFP, starving it of supply. This causes P0087 even when the pump itself is in good condition — the pump cannot build pressure if it cannot draw sufficient fuel. Replacing the fuel filter is a standard first step in P0087 diagnosis, particularly if the filter hasn’t been changed at the recommended service interval.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump (Transfer Pump) Failure

Before reaching the HPFP, diesel is drawn from the tank by a low-pressure transfer pump (either in the tank or inline). If this transfer pump is weak or failing, the HPFP receives inadequate supply pressure. The symptoms are similar to a blocked filter — low rail pressure — but filter replacement won’t resolve it. Checking the feed pressure before the HPFP is part of a thorough diagnosis.

Fuel Leak in the High-Pressure System

Any leak in the high-pressure fuel circuit — at a pipe fitting, injector return, or rail connection — will bleed off pressure and trigger P0087. High-pressure leaks on diesel systems are not always visible as drips (the pressure at injection is so high that fuel can escape as a fine mist and evaporate). A high-pressure leak down test is required to confirm this.

Common rail diesel injectors are precision components. If injectors are worn or failing, they may return excessive fuel to the tank — reducing net rail pressure. This is typically detected through an injector return rate test, which compares actual return flow from each injector against the expected range. High return rates point to injector wear and result in P0087 conditions alongside injector-specific codes.

  • Step 2 — Check the fuel pressure sensor: Verify the fuel rail pressure sensor signal is plausible and consistent. A known-good reference or gauge test can confirm sensor accuracy.
  • Step 3 — Live data rail pressure test: Monitor actual vs. requested rail pressure across the rev and load range. Does the pressure drop under acceleration? Or is it low at idle too?
  • Step 4 — Check fuel filter condition: Confirm the fuel filter is within service life. If overdue, replace before continuing diagnosis.
  • Step 5 — Feed pressure test: Check low-pressure supply before the HPFP to confirm the transfer pump is delivering adequate feed.
  • Step 6 — HPFP volume test: Using specialist diesel equipment, measure the pump’s output volume at set RPM against the specification. This confirms whether the pump is delivering adequate volume.
  • Step 7 — Injector return test: Measure return rates from each injector under cranking and running conditions. High return rates indicate injector wear contributing to low rail pressure.
