What Causes BMW AdBlue Faults?
1. Low or Depleted AdBlue Level
The most straightforward cause. BMW gives ample warning before the tank empties, but if warnings are ignored the countdown reaches zero and the car will not restart. A top-up with quality ISO 22241 specification AdBlue resolves this if no other fault is present.
2. Contaminated AdBlue Fluid
AdBlue degrades over time and is sensitive to contamination. Using cheap, off-specification fluid — or accidentally adding a different liquid — can trigger quality fault codes and require a full drain and flush of the tank and injector circuit.
3. NOx Sensor Failure
BMW diesels have upstream and downstream NOx sensors that monitor the effectiveness of the SCR system.
