Audi AdBlue Fault: Warning Lights, P204F, P20EE Fault Codes & UK Fixes

Your Audi’s AdBlue warning is telling you something specific. Here’s what the codes mean, why the light keeps coming back, and what your real options are.

Quick Answer

An Audi AdBlue fault usually means a low fluid level, a failing NOx sensor, a blocked SCR catalyst, or a faulty AdBlue pump or injector. Common codes include P204F and P20EE. Topping up fixes it temporarily — but if the light returns, you need a proper diagnosis. Pro Remapping in Stoke-on-Trent offers AdBlue fault diagnosis and permanent SCR delete solutions across Staffordshire.

Which Audi Models Have AdBlue?

AdBlue — or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) — was introduced on Euro 6 diesel Audis from around 2016 onwards. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system injects AdBlue into the exhaust stream to reduce NOx emissions. If you drive any of the following, your car almost certainly has an AdBlue system:

Audi A4 TDI (2016+)Audi A5 TDI (2016+)Audi A6 TDI (2015+)Audi A7 TDI (2015+)Audi A8 TDI (2015+)Audi Q5 TDI (2017+)Audi Q7 TDI (2015+)Audi Q8 TDI (2019+)

Both 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI variants use the SCR system. If your car was registered after September 2015 and runs on diesel, there’s a strong chance it has an AdBlue tank — usually located beneath the boot floor or behind a filler cap near the fuel cap.

Note: Older 1.6 TDI models may use a DPF-only emissions system without SCR. If you’re unsure whether your specific car has AdBlue, check the handbook or call us — we can confirm from your registration.

Audi AdBlue Warning Light: What Each Message Means

Audi uses dashboard messages and warning lights to alert you to AdBlue issues. The most common messages are:

Dashboard Message What It Means Urgency
“AdBlue: Range xxx miles” AdBlue level is low — countdown to engine start lock Medium
“AdBlue: Please refill” Tank critically low, refill immediately High
“AdBlue: No restart in xxx miles” Engine will not restart once counter reaches zero Urgent
“AdBlue system fault: See owner’s manual” System fault — not just low fluid High
“Emissions system fault” SCR system has failed or a component is faulty High

Low AdBlue messages are usually straightforward — top up and the light clears. But if the warning says “system fault” or returns after refilling, the problem is a component failure, not just fluid level.

Audi AdBlue Fault Codes: P204F, P20EE and What They Mean

When an Audi AdBlue warning appears alongside an engine management light, a diagnostic scan will usually retrieve one or more of these fault codes:

P204F — SCR System Efficiency Below Threshold

This is one of the most common Audi AdBlue codes. It means the SCR catalyst is not converting NOx emissions efficiently enough. Causes include a degraded or contaminated SCR catalyst, incorrect AdBlue concentration, or a faulty NOx sensor giving inaccurate readings.

P20EE — SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

P20EE is closely related to P204F and often appears alongside it. It indicates that the NOx conversion efficiency has fallen below what the ECU expects. On 3.0 TDI engines with two NOx sensors, you may see P20EE for Bank 1 and a corresponding code for Bank 2.

P20BA — Reductant Pump Control Circuit

This code points to a problem with the AdBlue dosing pump itself — the component that draws fluid from the tank and injects it into the exhaust. If the pump fails, no AdBlue reaches the SCR catalyst and fault codes escalate quickly.

P2068 — Reductant Injector

P2068 indicates an issue with the AdBlue injector — the nozzle that sprays fluid into the exhaust stream. Injectors can become blocked with crystallised urea, particularly if the car has been sitting unused for extended periods.

Warning: Clearing codes without fixing the underlying fault will only reset the warning temporarily. The code will return, and on many Audi models the ECU initiates a countdown to engine start lockout after a set number of failed cycles.

Why Does the Audi AdBlue Warning Keep Coming Back?

One of the most frustrating things Audi owners report is that the warning clears after a top-up, then returns within days or weeks. If this is happening to you, the fluid itself isn’t the issue — something else is failing in the system. The most common causes of recurring faults are:

Faulty NOx Sensor

  • Upstream or downstream sensor failing
  • Causes inaccurate efficiency readings
  • Common on A6 and Q7 3.0 TDI
  • Replacement cost: £200–£500 fitted

Degraded SCR Catalyst

  • Physical breakdown of the catalyst substrate
  • Often triggered by incorrect AdBlue use
  • Cannot be cleaned — requires replacement
  • Replacement cost: £800–£2,000+

AdBlue Pump Failure

  • Pump fails to deliver fluid under pressure
  • System detects zero delivery, triggers fault
  • Can cause immediate countdown lockout
  • Replacement cost: £300–£700 fitted

Crystallised AdBlue Injector

  • Urea crystallises in the injector nozzle
  • Partial or complete blockage
  • Common after long periods of inactivity
  • May be cleanable or need replacement

If your Audi has had the AdBlue warning more than twice in the same period, the cost of repeated parts replacement can quickly exceed the cost of a permanent solution. That’s where an AdBlue delete becomes worth considering.

Topping Up Audi AdBlue: Will It Fix the Problem?

If your dashboard shows a low AdBlue range message and the tank is genuinely low, topping up with the correct fluid should clear the warning. Audi AdBlue tanks typically hold 12–25 litres depending on the model. Use only ISO 22241-compliant AdBlue. Avoid cheap unbranded fluid, which can cause injector crystallisation.

After topping up, the warning should clear within a few miles of driving. If it doesn’t, or if it returns within a few weeks without the tank being genuinely empty again, the system has an underlying fault that top-ups won’t fix.

Important: Never put diesel, water, or any other fluid into the AdBlue filler. The tank and system components are not compatible with anything other than AdBlue. Contamination can cause expensive damage to the pump, injector, and catalyst.

What Happens If You Ignore an Audi AdBlue Fault?

Audi’s SCR system is programmed to enforce compliance with emissions standards. If the AdBlue system fails or the fluid runs out completely, the ECU will begin a countdown to engine start lockout. Once the counter reaches zero, the engine will not restart after you switch it off.

This is not a soft warning — it is a hard lock. If you are away from home when this happens, you will need the car recovered. Resetting the counter requires a dealer or specialist with the appropriate diagnostic equipment. Even then, if the underlying fault remains, the lock will return.

Beyond the lockout risk, driving with a faulty SCR system may affect your MOT. Emissions testing checks whether the system is operational, and a failed SCR catalyst can result in a fail. Understand your Audi AdBlue repair options before the situation becomes urgent.

Audi AdBlue Delete: Is It an Option?

For drivers who are tired of recurring faults, expensive parts, or the risk of being stranded, an AdBlue delete removes the SCR system’s role from the ECU entirely. The software is remapped so the car no longer monitors or requires AdBlue — eliminating all related warning lights, countdowns, and lockouts.

Pro Remapping offers AdBlue emulator and delete solutions for Audi TDI models across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. We work on A4, A6, Q5, Q7 and other Audi diesels regularly, and our approach is calibrated to each specific ECU type rather than a generic off-the-shelf map.

It’s worth understanding the legal position before proceeding. Read our guide on AdBlue delete legality in the UK — the picture is more nuanced than most people expect.

Our approach: We don’t pressure anyone into a delete. If your fault is a single faulty NOx sensor that’s cost-effective to replace, we’ll say so. If the repair cost is disproportionate to the car’s value or the faults keep returning, we’ll discuss what a permanent solution looks like for your specific model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive my Audi with an AdBlue fault warning?

You can drive short distances, but the ECU will eventually trigger a no-restart countdown. Once that counter reaches zero, the engine won’t restart after you switch it off. Don’t ignore the warning — get it diagnosed before it becomes a recovery situation.

How much does it cost to fix an Audi AdBlue fault?

It depends on the cause. A NOx sensor is typically £200–£500 fitted. An SCR catalyst can be £800–£2,000. An AdBlue pump is £300–£700. If multiple components are at fault, repair costs escalate quickly — which is why some owners opt for a permanent delete instead.

Does Audi AdBlue delete work on all TDI models?

We support a wide range of Audi TDI ECUs including Bosch EDC17 and MED17 variants. Contact us with your registration for confirmation on your specific model.

Will an AdBlue fault cause my Audi to fail its MOT?

Yes — a failed SCR system can cause an MOT emissions failure. The test checks that the system is functioning, not just that it’s present. A faulty catalyst will typically fail the NOx emissions reading.

How often does an Audi AdBlue tank need refilling?

On average, Audi AdBlue tanks need topping up every 7,000–10,000 miles, but this varies by model and driving style. Many models display a miles-remaining countdown so you can plan ahead.

3hrs from first calling Pro Remapping regarding my FPace DPF Filter full (red warning light), and with the vehicle in limp mode I set off to Fenton @ 40mph all the way. Once at the garage the guys diagnosed the fault, put the car on the ramp and got to work. 1.5hrs later the car was on the road, test driven and keys handed back to me. These guys certainly know their stuff. I cannot thank them enough for such a professional quick turnaround service. Also, to add, at a very good cost compared to their competitors! I will be certainly using these guys again should the need arise.
